I just realised what was the scam, purporting to be O2 and from London. They have Indian accents. The one-time code they give is BS. They ask if such-an-such email is the one associated with your account. DON'T give them the correct info - they will immediately try it out to access your account, and you will pay for calls from them. I have reported this number to the real 02.
